Roland Garros 1974-2014

Short history

In 1891 the first Championnat de France International de Tennis was held. Until 1925 it was open only to members of French clubs. This tournament was played on grass until 1927, when the new Roland Garros stadium was built at Porte d'Ateuil, Paris. This new stadium would have clay courts, which since then has been the underground for the French Open.

From 1912 to 1923, another French tournament was organised, played on hardcourt (the World Hardcourt Championships), which was open to international competitors. The actual French Open is a mixture of both tournaments: an international tournament on clay-courts.
