Tournament history

Organised for the first time in 1881 at Newport Rhode Island, the US Open soon moved to New York (Forrest Hills, Queens) where it was held until 1978. The underground was grass until 1975-1977, when the US Open was played on clay courts (allowing Guillermo Vilas to win his US Open title).

In 1978, the US Open moved to another New York Stadium (Flushing Meadows), where matches were played on hardcourts. Connors is the only player to have won the US Open on its 3 different surfaces: in 1974 on grass, in 1976 on clay (defeating Borg !) and another 3 times on hardcourt.

From 1997 on, NY's Arthur Ashe Stadium is additionally used to host the most important games.

Hard times

Youngest & oldest winners

The youngest player ever to win the US Open was Sampras, aged 19 years and 28 days in 1990.

The oldest winner since 1974 is Sampras too, 31 years old when he won the US Open for the 5th and last time in 2002. Connors at his last US Open title (1983) was just a few weeks younger.
